Višnja Gora

Višnja Gora

Some outstanding parts of our history as well as some special stories are connected to the ancient town - Višnja Gora.Is there anybody who has not yet heard about the famous snail, the symbol of wisdom, which is never in a hurry ut rather slowly and deliberately procedes.Another famous story is the one about the poor and well tried goat Lisec.

The picturesque small town spreads under the Old castle on the edge of the Dolenjsko podolje. Closer to the highways the modern part is getting its shape right now. Today's ruins above Višnja Gora are the remains of the Old castle from the 11th century. It was a magnificant home of the counts of Višnja Gora. Northern from the highway there used to be the so called Stari trg, actually a medieval predecessor of the today's Višnja Gora. Višnja Gora obtained its status of a town in the year 1478. It was an important traffic, administrative, cultural and military centre. Its development slightly decreased with the appereance of industry. Janez Cigler lived and died in Višnja Gora. In 1836 he wrote the first Slovene story Sreča v nesreči (Come Will or Woe).

There is a reformatory in Višnja Gora and an industrial plant Iskra. Small narrow ways lead the visitors in the centre of the town with the old town buildings.
