The basic characteristics of HTML are:
- HTML has standard formatting options:
- fonts, colors;
- tables
(timetable,
colors);
- figures, active maps
(MegaMath),
dynamic figures
(GIFs);
- forms and frames;
- local and global links (URL);
- sound, video;
- HTML documents are platform independent and adaptable
to different output devices (screen, printer) and
goals (paper, book, presentation);
- HTML documents can be used locally on a single computer
or on the network;
- HTML documents can be enhanced by user-prepared
helper applications;
- HTML is an open standard; used by several software producers;
low cost option;
- HTML document can combine works of several
authors (from different locations), it needs not
to have clear boundary;
- HTML documents are markuped text files. They can be easily
transformed to other document formats. This ensures durability
and reusability of such documents.
The formatting is described in HTML by the use of tags -
markup.
The current version of HTML offers limited possibilities
for a mathematical markup: we can write simple indexes
and exponents and we can include special characters.
